Beauty in a Magnet

Beauty in a Magnet

“Memories bring to me a feeling of an experience.” says Janet Heien. After a 22 year stint at Driscoll with HR, Janet has now turned her attentions to traveling and learning. She travels globally. She is particularly interested in learning the history and art of our Western Civilization. She frequently shares her travels and inspirations with us at Mulberry Gallery.

One day she came to our studio with a small bag filled with magnets. She had been collecting magnets from her many travels and wanted to frame them as a collection to hang in her home office. She originally found magnets an appealing way to share her travels with her friends by gifting the with a souvenir trinket or “tchotchke”.  These little mementos soon became special to Janet as well. She began collecting them as memories of the cities she had visited. As she frequently studied artists and the art history of the cities she visited, the magnets began to hold memories of these places once she left.

Janet’s home in California is filled with the layers and textures of her travels. It is also a home to two framed collections of magnets from around the world. Her framed magnet collections serve as a home for her memories to settle and remind her of her experiences.
